West Bengal Police Launch Online Portal for Police Clearance Certificates.

To streamline the process of obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police has launched a new online portal. This initiative aims to facilitate the issuance of PCCs, essential documents for visa applications and employment, in a more efficient and user-friendly manner. Previously, the process involved lengthy paperwork and multiple visits to police stations, often taking around 30 days to complete. The new system promises to reduce this time to just 72 hours.

Importance of Police Clearance Certificates

A Police Clearance Certificate is an official document issued by the police to certify that an individual has no criminal record or has not been involved in any criminal activity that led to a conviction. This document is crucial for various purposes such as immigration, employment, or residency in a foreign country. The need for a streamlined and quick process to obtain PCCs has been long felt, given the delays and inconveniences associated with the traditional method.

Launch of the Online Portal

The online portal was officially launched on Friday at Bhawani Bhawan, with senior CID officials in attendance. The event was graced by Dr. R. Rajasekaran, ADG, and IG CID; Vishal Garg, IG CID; Supratim Sarkar, ADG and IG (South Bengal); Sukesh Jain, IG Traffic; Akhilesh Chaturvedi, IG CID; and Ajoy Kumar, ADG and IG (Headquarters). During the launch, Sukesh Jain, IG Traffic, expressed optimism about the new system, stating, “We are hopeful that the process, which used to take so much time (around 30 days), will now be completed within 72 hours and in a hassle-free manner.”

Features of the Portal

The portal, hosted by the State Data Center, allows citizens to apply for a PCC online. This eliminates the need for lengthy paperwork and in-person visits to police stations. The digital initiative is expected to significantly reduce processing time and provide greater convenience to the public.

Steps to Apply for a PCC Online:

  1. Visit the Portal: Applicants need to visit the portal at https://pcc.wb.gov.in.
  2. Click on ‘Apply for PCC’: This will initiate the application process.
  3. Mobile Number for OTP: Applicants must provide their mobile number to receive an OTP (One-Time Password).
  4. Enter OTP: After entering the OTP, applicants will be directed to the application page.
  5. Aadhaar Number: The Aadhaar number must be shared for further verification.
  6. Second OTP: An OTP will be sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number to verify the authenticity of the application.
  7. Purpose of PCC: Applicants will be asked if the PCC is for visa or employment verification.
  8. Permanent Address: The permanent address must be provided.
  9. Criminal and Traffic Record: Applicants must submit their criminal and traffic records.

Upon completion of the verification process, a digitally signed PCC will be emailed to the applicant. An SMS notification will also be sent to confirm the issuance or rejection of the certificate.

Advantages of the Digital System

The new online portal is set to offer numerous advantages, including:

  • Time Efficiency: The process, which previously took around 30 days, will now be completed within 72 hours.
  • Convenience: Citizens can apply for a PCC from the comfort of their homes without the need to visit police stations.
  • Transparency: The digital process ensures transparency and reduces the chances of any procedural delays or malpractices.
  • Cost-Effective: The fixed fee of INR 300 is payable online, making the process cost-effective and straightforward.

Future Developments

The CID is also working on developing a portal for tenant verification. This upcoming initiative will further enhance the police services available to the public, ensuring safety and transparency in the rental process. The tenant verification portal will allow landlords and tenants to verify each other’s credentials online, adding another layer of security and convenience.

Conclusion

The launch of the online portal for obtaining Police Clearance Certificates by the West Bengal Police is a significant step towards digital governance and public service efficiency. This initiative not only reduces the time required to obtain a PCC but also provides a hassle-free and transparent process for the citizens. The move reflects the police department’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve public services and ensure the safety and security of the citizens. With the successful implementation of this portal, the West Bengal Police sets a benchmark for other states to follow in the digital transformation of public services.
